THE STUDIO
The Artist’s Studio, the Fashion Studio, the Sewing Room, the Atelier, the corner of your house or your bedroom you set aside for work… It is such an important space. A home from home, an escape and a sanctuary. It is somewhere where you can be alone with your work and engage with the creative process. The more you do so, the more the space becomes imbued with creative energy and each time you step into the space it is easier to get inspired, motivated and moving.
I’ve worked all over, I have worked from my bedroom, from my kitchen, from my garage, I have worked on the street, on the train, on the bus but for me there is nothing quite like the magic of having and running an artist’s studio. After shutting the door to my first studio I worked from home for a few years after. It was great for a time but the boundaries between home life and work life are hard to balance at the best of times. Living alone this was something I could manage to a point but when my girlfriend moved in with me, I decided that it was time to embark on a new studio adventure. If for no other reason than to avoid her from drowning in fabric scraps, off cuts and pins!
All jokes aside, I reached a point in my life and career where I felt I needed a specific and dedicated space to allow me to take the business to the next level. A new studio felt like maturing and would allow me the space to spread out and grow.
Turning it from a graphics design studio into my new studio took a lot more work than I expected but luckily I had some fantastic friends who came and helped out with the process! The large vinyl letters on the walls ripped the paint and plaster of as we took them down, there were giant sticky black squares from where picture frames had been stuck directly onto the walls and the the walls were riddled with screw holes all over. I have never used so much polyfilla in my life! The number of coats some of the walls took was crazy but we got to the point where it was workable eventually.
There were many moments in which I was filled with doubt and a few regrets to say the least! I had no idea what I was doing and the list of jobs seemed never ending. Today working in the studio and writing this I am overwhelmed with a feeling of pride for how far things have come! I cannot wait to show you more updates!!
